And many had come to resent the manipulation of noble emotions that had pulled an independent nation into overseas barbarity. German war crimes in Belgium were not myth while Austria committed terrible atrocities in Serbia, though, for some reason, these are usually overlooked.
Road signs welcoming motorists to Verdun and Ypres should also welcome them to the 20th century. A war to end wars and make the world safe for democracy cannot end without some lingering demand for peace and justice, or at least for something more valuable than the flu and prohibition.
It was a treaty that still required a body of law and an international court that we still do not have. Here was a movement with a long-term vision based on educating and organizing.
First, because war with the USSR, as a socialist country, is more dangerous to capitalism than a war between capitalist countries, for if a war between capitalist countries raises only the question of the supremacy of certain capitalist countries over other capitalist countries, war with the USSR must necessarily raise the question of the existence of capitalism itself.
